Mosquito Harborage Tips

Mosquitos can breed in standing water in as little as a few days. There are many places on your property that can potentially harbor mosquito breeding:

  • Open containers, such as 5-gallon buckets, totes or uncovered rain barrels
  • Swimming pools that are not covered and not in use
  • Unused “kiddie” pools that collect rainwater
  • Tarpaulins that are not kept taught and so collect rainwater
  • Birdbaths that are not regularly refreshed
  • Old tires, which should be disposed of

Mosquito breeding season in Massachusetts is approximately April through October. City inspectors are on the lookout for sources of standing water during the warm weather months. Please ensure that your yard is not a breeding ground for mosquitos!
