Traffic Study

Traffic studies are conducted when a request is made to the Traffic Commission for a four-way stop sign.   The study is conducted according to the Massachusetts Uniform Codes.  Stop signs are only placed on side streets.  When a four-way stop sign is requested a 5-year historical study is conducted by the Fall River Police Department on the intersection in question.   When conducting the study the department takes into consideration the impact to pedestrians, vehicles, and bicycle traffic.  When considering the placing of a four-way stop sign, the department assesses the traffic history of the intersection such as the number of pedestrian accidents and the number of vehicular collisions.

To request a four-way stop sign please send a letter to the traffic commission and please be specific about where and why a four-way stop sign is necessary.  All requests are heard by the traffic commission.  A return address and phone number are required to process your request.
