Department

Food & Milk

We are responsible for the permits and inspects all food establishments in the city to safeguard public health and provide to consumers food that is safe, unadulterated, and honestly presented.

The Inspectional Services Department is mandated by local ordinances and state law to fulfill very specific rules and regulations regarding the safe construction of buildings, certifications of structures – residential and commercial, habitability of dwelling units, enforcement of state sanitary codes, testing of weighing devices, signage, and occupancy permits as well as enforcing the City of Fall River Zoning Ordinances.

The food code establishes definitions; sets standards for management and personnel, food operations, and equipment and facilities; and provides for food establishment plan review, permit issuance, inspection, employee restriction, and permit suspension.

We safeguard public health by permitting and inspecting at least once a year food establishment such as restaurants, school and hospital cafeterias, caterers, and temporary event vendors such as booths at public fairs to ensure that food is prepared and maintained safely to prevent food-borne illnesses. They investigate reports of food illnesses, working with businesses and citizens to educate and correct deficiencies.

Occasionally, as a result of unsatisfactory inspections or complaints from the public, more frequent follow-up inspections are conducted.
