Description: Need concerned adult volunteers to help make educational decisions for students in the custody of the State. Volunteers would aid students in group homes, residential treatment centers and foster homes in Fall River. Training sessions are held twice a year at Bristol Community College in Fall River.

Needed skills: To be an auxiliary police officer, candidate should be: Age 18 to 65, have a High School Diploma or GED, be of good moral character, must be physically fit and have a valid Mass. Driver's License and must own a motor vehicle. Must successfully complete the Auxiliary Police Officer Basic Training Program. A minimum of fours hours of service is required per week.

Description: A citywide, non-profit, all volunteer organization. Our mission is to provide a sustainable tree planting program for the citizens of Fall River and to educate the public regarding the benefits that trees bring to a community. Volunteers to assist with the program are welcome to join the efforts to revitalize our urban forest.

Events: Annual Arbor Day (tree planting) Last Friday in April Tree planting coordinated with Fall River DPW. Dates determined by application requests from citizens.

Description: Mentoring Program. We work with at-risk youth ages 16-21, who are not pursuing traditional educational routes. We offer GED remediation and job readiness training, as well as other supportive services to help them to achieve their goals. We are looking for adults age 24 and older to participate in a mentor program. We will be pairing mentors and mentees based on career interests as well as personality compatibility. Mentors will be required to participate as little as once a month or as much as once a week.

Description: The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers from January through March to help with their hospitality nights. If at any point during these months the city's shelter beds for the homeless are all being used the Salvation Army will set up extra beds so that no one will be left in the cold. The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers who would be willing to volunteer one or more nights during the months of January through March. Hours needed are from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. and volunteers can offer to work split shifts or the entire evening. Volunteers must be 18 or older and must pass a criminal background, CORI and SORI check.

Description: SCCLS is a non-profit corporation which provides free civil legal services to low-income and elderly residents of our communities in the areas of housing and family law, government benefits including social security disability, as well as elder, education, immigration, and consumer law. Our mission is to achieve equal justice for the poor and disadvantaged through community based legal advocacy.

The Massachusetts Legal Assistance for Self-Sufficiency Program (MLASSP) is a project of SCCLS, Inc. and is funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service and administered through the Massachusetts Service Alliance. MLASSP places 28 AmeriCorps members with an interest in public service law in participating legal services organizations throughout Massachusetts. Members will serve under professional supervision providing legal assistance to low-income people in civil (non-criminal) matters.

SSTAR: Parenting Wisely Program

Description: SSTAR is a non-profit mental health and substance abuse treatment facility. Parenting Wisely is one of many programs offered by the agency. Parenting Wisely is a prevention program that offers free parenting skills education to the community through the use of CD-ROM programs.

What we are looking for: Parenting Wisely is looking for an adult who would commit to this parenting program. This person must enjoy working with people from all backgrounds, must be dependable, and must have reliable transportation. The following responsibilities make up the job:

The volunteer would
1) Acclimate the participant to the program,
2) Complete a short demographic information sheet at the beginning of the program,
3) Complete a short survey with the participant at the end of the program,
4) "Steer" the participant to the resources requested.

A COMPLETE ORIENTATION TO SSTAR, PARENTING WISELY, AND AVAILABLE RESOURCES WILL BE PROVIDED.
Hours: Parenting Wisely would like someone to commit to one full 8-hour day a week, but please contact us for more information if you are seriously interested. Parenting Wisely is available to parents Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Description: The Trustees of Reservations is a private, non-profit conservation organization that preserves, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value. In partnership with the City of Fall River and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, The Trustees have been working to establish the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve, which covers 13,600-acres in Fall River, Freetown and Dartmouth. The bioreserve offers the public a chance to explore and learn about this natural area. The Trustees also have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. Those who enjoy physical work can help to maintain the trail system or help to build picnic tables. Those more interested in environmental science and research can get involved in a "citizen science" project such as certifying vernal pools or conducting stream surveys in the bioreserve. The Trustees also offer after-school programs for area youth and need volunteers to help to supervise and to work with children. Help is also needed with planning and running public events such as Earth Day events and the annual 5K Run for the Woods.
