The Primary Goals of the Organization

To serve, without prejudice or favoritism, all of the community's citizens by safeguarding collectively and individually their lives against the death dealing and injurious effects of fires, explosions and other emergencies.

The safeguarding of the general economy and welfare of the community by preventing major conflagrations and the destruction by fire of large payroll, economically essential industries and businesses.

To serve all of the community's citizens and the property owners by protecting their individual material wealth and economic well being against the destructive effects of fire and explosions. In meeting this goal, all property deserves to have an equivalent degree of protection, commensurate with the actual property hazard involved.

Division of Emergency Medical Services

On July 1, 1975 the Division of Emergency Medical Services was established in the Fall River Fire Department. This was accomplished through the efforts of Fire Chief Louis A. Shea Jr. who was the Fire Chief at that time.

In 1992 Fire Chief Edward J. Dawson in cooperation with local hospitals, initiated measures to upgrade the service in order to properly address the continually increasing medical demands of the city by incorporating an Advanced Life Support (ALS) component to the present system.

The system, which commenced operation of February 6, 1993, has greatly enhanced medical care in the field by bringing many of the components of the emergency room directly to the patient in the field. Fall River has become one of the only major fire departments in Southeastern Massachusetts to have an ALS service delivered to the public through its fire department. In addition to the upgrade in the level of service, a third vehicle was then placed into service. This has not only enhanced health care to the citizens of the city but has also greatly assisted in reducing the high workload for the existing two (2) BLS units.

In July 2001 the department upgraded the second of its 3 Medical Rescues to the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level. The remaining third vehicle currently operating at the BLS level will be upgraded to the Intermediate Level in the near future. This will now further enhance the department's ability to provide quality pre-hospital emergency medical care to the citizens of our city.

The three Medical Rescues operated by the Fall River Fire department are currently housed at the following locations: Medical Rescue 2 at the Flint Reney/Eastwood Fire Station 400 Eastern Avenue, Medical Rescue 3 at the Kosior/Globe Fire Station 659 Globe Street and Medical Rescue 4 at the Central Fire Station 165 Bedford Street.
